Is Modern Family on Netflix? Where to Watch It in 2026
Modern Family, ABC’s mockumentary sitcom about the Pritchett, Dunphy, and Tucker-Pritchett families, ran for 11 seasons and 250 episodes from 2009 to 2020 and won 22 Emmy Awards. If you want to binge it from the start, the first question is usually whether it’s on Netflix.
- No. As of October 31, 2026, Modern Family is not on Netflix in the US – or, according to the catalog tracker uNoGS, in any other country.
- In the US, all 11 seasons stream on Hulu and Peacock.
- Outside the US, Hulu and Peacock don’t work. To reach your US account while traveling, you need a VPN with US servers – ExpressVPN is our pick – but both services try to block VPNs.
In this guide, I explain why Modern Family isn’t on Netflix, where you can stream it in the US and what that costs, and how to watch your US subscription when you’re abroad.
October 2026 update: Earlier versions of this guide recommended connecting to a Netflix library in Germany or Austria. That no longer works, because Modern Family has left those Netflix libraries too. We have rewritten the guide around Hulu and Peacock, which carry the full series in the US.
Is Modern Family on Netflix?
No. Modern Family is not available on Netflix in the United States. When we checked uNoGS – an unofficial search engine for Netflix catalogs in every country – on October 31, 2026, it listed no country where Netflix currently streams the show.
That wasn’t always the case. For years, Netflix carried some seasons in a handful of countries, such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Those deals have since ended.
Why Modern Family isn’t on Netflix
The show was made by 20th Century Fox Television (now 20th Television), which became part of Disney when Disney bought most of 21st Century Fox in 2019. Disney streams it on its own Hulu, and since a 2021 deal, Hulu shares the US streaming rights with NBCUniversal’s Peacock. Netflix has no part in that arrangement.
Will Modern Family come back to Netflix?
Neither Netflix nor Disney has announced anything. Licensing deals change, so it’s worth a quick search on Netflix now and then – but for now, Hulu and Peacock are the places to stream all 11 seasons.
Where to Watch Modern Family in the USA
In the US, you can stream every season of Modern Family on two services. Both list all 11 seasons and 250 episodes. Prices are as of October 31, 2026, before tax.
Hulu
Hulu has the complete series, and every Hulu plan includes it. Hulu’s plans start at $12.49 per month. If you also want Disney+, the Disney+ and Hulu bundle (both with ads) costs $12.99 per month.
Peacock
Peacock also carries all 11 seasons. There is no free plan. Peacock’s plans are:
- Select (with ads): $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year
- Premium (with ads): $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year
- Premium Plus: $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year
Peacock’s Select plan has a smaller library than Premium, so check on Peacock’s Modern Family page that your plan includes the show before you subscribe.
Which one should you choose?
If you already pay for one of them, you have Modern Family. If you have neither, Peacock is the cheaper way in – as long as your plan includes the show – while the Disney+ and Hulu bundle makes sense if you also want Disney+.
How to Watch Modern Family on Hulu or Peacock From Outside the USA
Hulu and Peacock are US-only services. Peacock’s help center says it is available only in the United States and certain U.S. territories. Hulu says that, because of rights issues, it needs to know your real location, and it won’t stream to users of anonymous proxies.
That’s a problem if you pay for Hulu or Peacock and travel abroad: your subscription still runs, but the apps won’t play Modern Family. A VPN can help by giving you a US IP address:
- Choose a VPN with US servers that works with streaming services – our picks are below.
- Install the VPN app on your phone, computer, or TV device.
- Connect to a server in the US.
- Open Hulu or Peacock, sign in to your US account, and search for Modern Family.
Keep in mind that both services actively look for VPN connections, so no VPN is guaranteed to work every time, and changing your location this way may go against their terms of use.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN is our top pick for streaming from abroad. In our earlier tests, it unblocked a wide range of streaming services, including several Netflix libraries, with fast and stable connections. Results change often.
ExpressVPN has servers in 214 locations in 113 countries, including all 50 US states, so you can usually find a US server close to where your account is registered. Its own Lightway protocol uses post-quantum encryption, and its servers run on 10 Gbps connections.
For TV viewing, there are apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, Android TV, and routers, as well as computers and phones. Depending on the plan, you can use ExpressVPN on 10, 12, or 14 devices at the same time. Security features include AES-256 encryption, a kill switch (Network Lock), RAM-only servers, and an independently audited no-logs policy.
Price: The Basic plan costs $2.99 per month on the 2-year plan with 4 free months ($83.72 for the first 28 months) or $4.99 per month on the 12-month plan with 3 free months ($74.85 for the first 15 months), then renews at $99.95 per year (as of October 31, 2026; ExpressVPN doesn’t show the 2-year plan to every visitor). New customers get a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access (PIA) is one of the cheapest big VPNs, and its prices don’t go up at renewal. It has servers in 180 locations in 113 countries, including all 50 US states, plus 35 streaming-optimized locations that it says it monitors and tests against streaming services. Many of its locations are virtual, and PIA marks them in its apps.
One subscription covers an unlimited number of devices, and there are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android (including Android TV), iOS, and Apple TV. PIA’s no-logs policy has been tested in two US court cases, in 2016 and 2018, where it had no logs to hand over, and Deloitte has audited its no-logs setup three times. Keep in mind that PIA is based in the US, a member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.
Price: $2.03 per month on the 3-year plan with 3 extra months ($79 for 39 months, renewing at $79 every 3 years), $3.99 per month on the 1-year plan ($47.88), or $11.95 for one month (as of October 31, 2026). New users who buy directly from PIA get a 30-day money-back guarantee.
CyberGhost
CyberGhost is a good choice if you want a simple app. It has dedicated streaming servers, listed by streaming service in its apps, so you don’t have to guess which server to use. Its network has about 9,600 servers in 125 locations in 100 countries, though it marks 56 of those countries as virtual.
There are apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV, but not for Apple TV. One subscription covers up to 7 devices. Deloitte has audited CyberGhost’s no-logs setup three times, all servers run in RAM only, and the apps include a kill switch and DNS leak protection.
Price: $2.19 per month on the 2-year plan with 2 extra months ($56.94 for the first 26 months, then $56.94 per year), $6.99 per month on the 6-month plan, or $12.99 for one month (as of October 31, 2026). The 6-month and 2-year plans come with a 45-day money-back guarantee (14 days on the monthly plan) when you buy directly from CyberGhost.
How We Chose These VPNs
We picked these three VPNs from our best VPNs for Netflix, using the same criteria:
- Streaming record: a history of getting past streaming services’ VPN blocks in our tests.
- US servers: many US locations, so you can connect close to home.
- TV apps: apps for the devices people watch Hulu and Peacock on.
- Security and privacy: strong encryption, a kill switch, and an audited no-logs policy.
- Price and value: the first-term price, the renewal price, the number of devices, and the refund terms.
The order follows the VPNs’ total scores in our reviews. For a wider comparison, see our list of the best VPNs.
Can You Use a Free VPN to Watch Modern Family?
I don’t recommend it. Free VPNs usually have few US servers, data caps, and slow speeds, and because many people share the same IP addresses, streaming services find and block them quickly. Even when one connects, it’s rarely fast enough for an HD binge.
Privacy is the bigger issue. Running a VPN costs money, so many free VPNs pay for it with ads or by collecting and selling data about their users.
If you only need a VPN for a trip, a paid VPN with a money-back guarantee is the better option: ExpressVPN and PIA give you 30 days, and CyberGhost gives you 45 days on its longer plans.
Other Ways to Watch Modern Family
If you don’t want another streaming subscription, you can buy Modern Family by the episode or season on digital stores such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. You pay once and keep access in your account, which can work out cheaper if you only want a few seasons.
Outside the US, Modern Family is often on other services, and which one depends on your country. Search for the show in your local streaming apps or on a streaming search site such as JustWatch to see where it’s available where you live.
Hulu or Peacock Not Working With Your VPN? Try These Fixes
If Hulu shows an “anonymous proxy” error (for example, error BYA-403-011 or P-EDU101) or Peacock says it isn’t available in your region, try these steps:
- Connect to a different US server, or to your VPN’s streaming-optimized server if it has one.
- Clear the app’s cache or your browser’s cookies, or use a private window, then sign in again.
- Restart the app or device after you connect to the VPN, not before.
- Check that your VPN isn’t leaking your real IP address or DNS requests.
- On phones and tablets, turn off location services for the streaming app, as some apps also check your device’s location.
- Ask your VPN’s live chat which servers currently work with Hulu or Peacock.
If nothing works, use the money-back guarantee and try a different VPN.
Wrap Up
Modern Family is not on Netflix – not in the US and, as of October 31, 2026, not in any other country either. In the US, Hulu and Peacock both stream all 11 seasons, and you can also buy episodes on digital stores.
If you have a Hulu or Peacock account and travel abroad, a VPN with US servers, such as ExpressVPN, can give you access to your account again – just keep in mind that both services try to block VPNs.
